Class Template: Paladin

Following recent discussion here and on Josh’s site here is a quick go at a “class template”. There are two versions – the first is based on my original framework, the second on what I believe is Josh’s take on things. In V2, I’m assuming that the character will have rolled on a separate racial/locale based background table, and I’ve made up the Paladin talent from Josh’s postings about the Paladin in Dragon Hack. An advantage of V1 is that you can create anti-paladins/blackguards by selecting the appropriate Divine Gift. The “V2” paladin is much more the classic article!

Paladin (V1)

You are a holy warrior, smiting your foes with the strength of your arm and the power of your faith.

Take the Warrior class.

You gain the Willpower (Faith) ability focus.

Replace one of your Warrior weapon talents with a Divine Gift appropriate to your deity.

Roll 2d6 twice on the following table for additional benefits:

2: +1 Willpower

3-4:  Dexterity (Riding)

5: Perception (Empathy)

6: Cunning (Military Lore)

7-8: +1 Strength

9: Strength (Heavy Blades)

10-11: Communication (Leadership)

12: +1 Communication

Paladin (V2)

You are a holy warrior, smiting your foes with the strength of your arm and the power of your faith.

Take the Warrior class.

Pick one of the following ability focuses: Constitution (Stamina) or Dexterity (Riding).

You gain the Novice degree in the Paladin Talent. At 3rd level you gain the Journeyman degree, and at 5th level the Master degree.

Paladin Talent

Novice: Sense Evil. You gain the ability to sense the presence of evil beings or intentions. You have +2 to your Perception (Empathy) tests to discern the motives or sense the presence of evil creatures.

Journeyman: Lay on Hands. While considered an instrument of war, paladins also know that the tide of battle can depend on the health of their allies. As a major action, paladins can heal themselves or their allies a number of times per day equal their Willpower. The amount healed is equal to 1d6 plus the paladin’s Willpower (Faith).

Master: Smite Evil. You gain the ability to enhance their weapon with the power of your deity. You can add your Willpower to all damage you deal against evil opponents, and your weapons affect evil creatures who can only be hurt by magic weapons, even if your weapon is mundane.
