Racial Talent: Elf

Following on from my last post, here is an attempt at a racial talent for 4e-style elves.

If you choose to play an elf, modify your character as follows:

Add 1 to either your Dexterity or Perception attributes.

You can read and speak Elven and Common.

You receive proficiency in the Bows Weapon Group.

You receive the Novice degree of the Elven Racial Talent.

Racial Talent: Elf

Novice: You have keen senses and gain +1 to Perception (Hearing) and Perception (Seeing) tests. You can see in low light levels and are your attacks are unaffected by this level of illumination. In addition, you have the Elven Accuracy power: once per combat you may re-roll any attack roll, but you must use the results of the second roll.

Journeyman: Your senses have been honed by experience. You may re-roll any Perception (Hearing) or Perception (Seeing) tests, but must use the result of the second roll. In addition, when using your Elven Accuracy power you gain +2 to the second roll.

Master: Your spirit is part of nature itself – it guides and protects you. You gain +2 to your Speed, and +1 to any Cunning (Natural Lore), Dexterity (Stealth) and Dexterity (Acrobatics) tests. In addition, once per combat you may re-roll any Dexterity (Stealth) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) tests, but you must use the results of the second roll.

    Looks good. I’m excited about the idea.

    I’m concerned that it seems to be much beefier than the standard talents. Are you planning on making this available anytime the player can take a new talent, based on a level by level basis or with it be more like a specialisation that starts at level 6?

    As I mentioned about these being beefier:

    The Journeyman level of this talent gives you a better bonus than the Master level of the Scouting Talent. And the +2 to your Elven accuracy is huge. You get a free re-roll AND you gain a +2? The Novice level of Archery grants a +2 but you must take the aim action. Would these stack? I might say the elf has to nominate their preferred weapon and they’ve grown more accurate with that particular weapon or something. I’m not sure.

    I love the ideas but I think you need to be careful that the racial talents don’t make the standard talents superfluous.

      Yes, the idea is that once you have the novice level you treat it as a regular talent for the purposes of gaining additional degrees. And on a second reading I think you’re right: it is rather overpowered, especially as I would see the bonuses stacking. For a second version I would probably move Elven Accuracy to Journeyman and Elven Precision to Master, reducing the bonus to +1. I might also remove the +1 to Dexterity (Stealth, Acrobatics) from Master as well.
      Balancing racial talents will likely be an issue, especially as (following Dragon Hack) the Human racial talent will probably be a free choice of an extra talent. So they should be comparable to the regular talents. Compared to regular DA characters they will be slightly overpowered though, but I think that’s just the nature of the setting.
